Dr. Jack Levy & Dr. Keira Ballantyne, National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition
September 18, 2008
Description:
The number of English language learners in the nation’s K-12 schools continues to grow, yet more and more teachers without specialized ESOL training are responsible for educating our ELLs: fewer than 30% of teachers who have at least one ELL have had relevant professional development, and only four states require such training for all pre-service teachers. To be effective, education and professional development for teachers must be responsive to their backgrounds and prior experiences.
In this presentation, Drs. Jack Levy and Keira Ballantyne will describe specific Professional Development resources and strategies tailored specifically for teachers of English language arts, social studies, math and science who work with ELLs. They will highlight a set of recommendations that are keyed to the standards of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Staff Development Council (NSDC).
